I have always compared the house of TATAs and Reliance and have noted the differences between the two. Now, everyone will no doubt be comparing them again and drawing their own conclusions. With Reliance splitting up, it is surely tempting to consider the TATAs as the sole family owned/run empire now remaining in India. (if we doscount Ranbaxy, Birla and other whatnots).
I remember writing about Dhirubhai Ambani, long back .. in fact on my old site. (I still havent transferred the archives). I should have written about the TATAs as well, just to balance the offset. Well, Newsweek has done a spendid job here.
Posted by anya at July 6, 2005 07:00 PM | TrackBackTwo things - 1. Reliance even after being split up is huge and it still is very much a family-run business
2. One major difference between the Tatas and Ambani is that the Tatas were sort of royalty even before they started the Tata group, while Ambani was a petrol pump attendant. I totally believe that "The first million is the hardest"
Posted by: Vel at July 6, 2005 09:22 PMAccording to a lot of conspiracy theorists (me included ;)) this ownership dispute was a well thought out move... They bought back a lot of reliance shares when the price went down almost to 500... And now that they've settled it, its gone up over 640... think of the money they made man... smart business move i'd say..
Posted by: Prashant at July 6, 2005 11:05 PMVel: Reliance, is now more like 2 businesses run by 2 families. Also another major differece you are forgetting is that the TATAs have always been clean - never been roiled in any controversy unlike the Ambanis.
Prashant: I know, but we will never know perhaps.
Posted by: anya at July 7, 2005 11:34 AMI disagree with a few lines in the news report.
Clean: Yes the TATA family is, but the companys are not. The pune plant is famous for the malpractices that the higher excecutives carry out. Unbelievable amount of corruption at that level. Though the Tata's themselvevs as a family are clean.
Union: The pune plant is highly disgustingly unionised. The union frustrates the other white collars just as much as the otherway round. Not somthing you want to see.
All in all, you see the best of brains, but the worst of ettiquitte!
Posted by: Nupur at July 7, 2005 02:35 PMrecently when TCS reached 1billion dollar mark, a question was asked,"why infosys (baby company compared to TCS) took less time to reach $1bn and TCS (old 30odd years) took these many years." the answer i found out as an employee of TCS, that the TATA group is highgly ethical, not a single black rupee(or dollar) is spent on fulfilling anybody's dreams. as claimed by the TAAT group for years, TCS is also highly 'socially aware' company. large chunk of the profit is spent on the welfare of the society.
TATA's know, they can mint money from people at any time, but that way they will lose their soul. the heart and soul of this group is morals and values which are being followed for over 100 years
Posted by: key at July 8, 2005 12:52 AMKeyur, no comments !!!
I know malpractices of TCS in their ERP practice... They will go to any extent to dupe the customer and mint money.
