Maria Full of Grace: [Spanish, English subtitles] I had read about this movie somewhere and it had stuck in my mind. Maria is a girl growing up in a small village in Columbia, who wants a better life. She is smart, independent, strong willed and hardworking. The movie revolves on how she gets involved in acting as a 'mule' to get drugs, namely cocaine, across and into the US, and what happens then. Realistic plot, well directed, not overly emotional. What more do you need?
Black: Story based on the life of Helen Keller. As I would probably be the last person who hadnt seen this movie, no sense in writing a review huh? Anyways, acting by both Rani Mukherhjee and Amitabh is good. *The movie has no songs!!* I was overjoyed then I saw this .. this is truly a feat. And I nearly had a heart attack, when after the movie ended .. the credits started to scroll and the first line said .. "Directed by Sanjay Leela Bhansali" .... he can make watchable films, with understandable plots as well?? That will teach me to judge a person by his previous work. I liked the film, sniffled a bit too, but the Sanjay Bhansali [why does everyone say all 3 parts of his name?] part was the most gratifying one. Honestly.

Posted by: Parag at June 3, 2005 10:20 AMTo be honest I felt that Black is totally made keeping Oscars/Cannes etc. in mind. I am not sure how much sincere SLB is to the subject. Otherwise why do you need the snow, anglo-indian characters, english dialogues... Somehow I was constantly feeling that all these were to make the western audience comfortable...
Posted by: Rohit at June 5, 2005 08:42 AMI thought they were more along the Helen Keller lines and as the special sign language, the facial muscle reading were all done originally in English.
Posted by: anya at June 5, 2005 01:36 PMEnjoyed "Black" thoroughly..Will try to get my hands on "Maria Full of Grace..."-btw, have you watched "Amelie?". It's lovely.
Posted by: sbk at June 7, 2005 10:09 PMsbk: yup -- have watched amelie .. good movie. the girl has acted very well.
Posted by: anya at June 8, 2005 01:46 AM"Amelie", a good movie. Amelie, an innocent and naive girl in Paris, with her own sense of justice, decides to help those around her and along the way, discovers love.
Movie has Class of it's own. Worth to watch.
Yeah, Maria Full of Grace is a nice movie! The smart and independent nature of Maria is creditable! Awesome movie. Black is OK, but the best part of the movie that I liked is IT IS SIMPLE!!
